How to Reduce Keyboard Noise Without Replacing Your Keyboard
Mechanical keyboards and noise complaints go together like cars and parking tickets — one tends to follow the other. But you don't have to choose between a great keyboard and a peaceful office. Several effective methods reduce mechanical keyboard noise significantly, from free desk-level changes to a full switch swap.
Where keyboard noise actually comes from
Before reaching for solutions, it helps to understand the sources. Most mechanical keyboard noise comes from three places:
The switch mechanism. Clicky switches (Cherry MX Blue, Kailh Box White) have a click mechanism that produces a distinct audible click at actuation. Linear and tactile switches don't have this — their noise comes entirely from the next two sources.

Case foam and the tape mod: addressing resonance
The hollow space inside most keyboard cases acts as an acoustic resonator. Sound from keypresses bounces around inside the case before exiting, adding a hollow, plasticky character to every keystroke.
The tape mod places strips of masking tape on the back of the PCB. This is free, takes five minutes, and directly reduces case resonance. Open the case (remove the screws on the underside), apply 3–4 strips of masking tape across the back of the PCB, and reassemble.

Silent switches add a small dampening mechanism inside the switch housing — typically a thin layer of foam or rubber on the top and bottom of the stem's travel path. This cushions both the key-down and key-up sounds without changing the actuation mechanism.
