Done well, it reduces scratch, calms spring noise, and makes a mid-tier switch feel more expensive. Done poorly, it turns crisp tactiles into mush and leaves goo where contacts need to stay clean.

I treat switch lubrication like seasoning food. Thin, even, and intentional beats heavy-handed. The goal is not to prove how much grease you own. The goal is smoother travel while preserving the switch character you actually wanted.

What lubrication actually changes

Inside a typical MX-style switch, plastic parts slide against each other and a spring compresses above a metal leaf. Microscopic roughness in those sliding surfaces creates scratchy feel and extra noise. A thin film of lubricant fills those irregularities so the stem moves with less friction.

Lube can also quiet spring ping by reducing metal-to-plastic chatter, especially when springs are bag-lubed or lightly coated. It will not rewrite a switch’s fundamental design. A scratchy housing may improve a lot. A poorly designed bump will not become your dream tactile just because it is shiny.

Because lubricant changes friction and can soften edges, quantity and placement matter. Linears usually forgive a slightly richer coat. Tactiles demand restraint on the bump legs or you will polish away the feedback that made you buy them.

Oil migrates more easily than grease, so keep it away from electrical contact areas where it does not belong.

Dielectric greases and random household lubricants are not automatic substitutes. Stick to products the keyboard community knows are plastics-safe and used for switches. The wrong chemistry can degrade stems or turn sticky after months.

How to lube switches step by step

Set up a clean station and open one switch cleanly

Work over a tray so springs do not escape into the carpet dimension. Open the switch, separate top housing, stem, spring, and bottom housing, and keep the metal leaves untouched. If a leaf bends, the switch may become inconsistent or dead.

Lube the bottom housing contact points

Apply a thin coat where the stem rails slide and where the stem touches during travel. Avoid flooding the LED well and stay off the metal leaf contacts. If you can see white clumps, you used too much. Brush it out to a translucent film.

Lube the stem with intention

For linears, lightly coat the front and side rails that slide in the housing. A little on the bottom of the stem can smooth bottom-out, but excess here gets messy. For tactiles, keep grease off the bump legs or use an almost dry brush so you do not erase the bump. This is the step that separates good lubing from ruined tactiles.

Treat the spring, then reassemble and test

Bag-lube springs with a tiny amount of oil or brush a whisper of grease near the ends if they ping. Once your sample switch feels right, repeat the same amount on the rest of the set. Consistency matters more than perfection on any single unit. If your hands get tired, pause. Rushed lubing creates the greasy outliers that feel sluggish later.

Linear vs tactile vs clicky: change the recipe

Linears are the easiest training ground. Smooth rails, quiet springs, and even application usually produce an obvious upgrade. Many factory-lubed linears still benefit from a careful hand rework if stock lube is uneven.

Tactiles need a lighter touch. Preserve the bump geometry. Some people only spring-lube and lightly house-lube tactiles, leaving bump legs nearly dry. If the bump disappears, you overshot. Wipe and learn, or accept a smoother but less pronounced switch.

Clicky switches are often best left alone or only lightly spring-lubed. Grease in the wrong place can choke the click mechanism or make the sound inconsistent. If you bought clicky for the sound, do not lubing-hobby your way into a muted disappointment.

Worth it: scratchy budget linears, spring-pingy switches you otherwise like, and custom builds where you want a refined baseline before foam and tape mods. Also worth it when factory lube is visibly uneven.

Less worth it: already excellent factory-tuned switches, clicky switches you enjoy stock, and situations where you have not yet decided whether you even like the switch family. Do not spend three hours lubing a set you might reject after one workday.

If your board’s biggest problems are stabilizer rattle and a hollow case, lubing switches alone will not create magic. Sequence the mods. Stabilizers first, then switches, then case sound tuning. Otherwise you will misattribute improvements.

Quality control after the bag is empty

Install the lubed switches and type a real paragraph, not just a few taps. Hunt for sluggish keys, stems that stick at the top, and weirdly loud outliers. Those usually mean excess lube, a misaligned spring, or a housing that did not click back together fully.

Give the board a day of normal use before judging the final result. Some setups settle slightly as lube distributes. If a few switches remain scratchy, it can be faster to reopen those outliers than to convince yourself the whole set failed.
